did a follow-up question on guns. the most interesting part was the redirect. did you notice that? he asked about gun violence which happened in colorado, and could happen in your hometown, a school, a mall, and he started talking about the inner cities, and how the inner cities need discipline etc. well, it's a republican theme that they've been doing for a long time. i want to bring in professor tricia rose here from brown university. our clever nickname for professor rose is the professor. professor rose, it seems like this is something we've seen before. let me show you a rick santorum clip b-12, and let's watch this. >> i do not want to make people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. i want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families. >> cenk: there are a lot of code words within the republican party, and now when you ask

about guns, they don't answer guns. they say black people need discipline. >> yeah, you call me the professor because i am the professor. that's very similar to what paul ryan is going to do. i'm going to call him a liar because he is going to lie. there is no question that there is a total narrative shifting going on, and you know, basically the dog whistle we've been talking about for months now. what is happening here is that i think paul ryan felt very uncomfortable because he was caught in having to think about what it means when you have very not strong but weak gun laws, and importantly serious issues with violence in society as a whole. the trayvon martin incident in addition to the aurora, colorado, incident make it clear unregulated limited regulation with access to high repetition automatic weaponry is totally unnecessary for hunting and allows a small number of

unstable people to have a profoundly negative impact. but what they're doing is racializing and criminalizing black people for being responsible for what is a societal problem. that's been an ongoing strategy that works unfortunately terribly well. we have to start figuring that out. why is that so effective in this so-called post-racial world we live in. >> cenk: he's in michigan. michigan has huge violence issues. the gun problems are all over the country, not just cities or ruralrural areas anywhere else. and detroit, cops are get together point where they throw their hands up and saying don't come into detroit because it's so dangerous. is the proper thing to focus on the gun laws or something else? >> listen, you cannot have begun-related crime without access to a lot of guns.

70 or 80 years ago in cities in urban america when african-americans were migrating you had no gun crime because access to guns were rare. you had very little violence in all communities because access to guns was largely rare and it was not part of a lobbyist group to encourage people to arm themselves for identity purposes not for safety purposes. so there is no question that there is manipulation. detroit is in an enormous crisis. detroit's crisis has something to do with race and race as racism but nothing to do with cultural issues. what it has to do with the december imagination of all the various institutions that ryan tried to mention. not just churches, which can't do everything alone but schools and jobs. not just jobs but creating a social fabric. you cannot do that if you're destroying criminalizing and taking families apart and

giving parents very little opportunity. so i mean, it's absolutely a much bigger crisis than they're willing to address. they're always focusing on behavior over social structure. so some how you can behave your way into a safe, fair, economically safe neighborhood. >> cenk: professor tricia rose. thank you. when we come back, very unprecedented event strikes against walmart. that's interesting. why are they striking, and what is walmart doing in response? >> the protesters are with a group called "making change at walmart." they came on buses from dallas, miami, washington and san francisco. >> cenk: when you see the disparity between what the walmart owners have and what the rest of the country has, it is stunning. especially when they don't give their workers the benefits that they need. now, we're also going to talk about a guy who says, you know what i'll fire all my workers if obama is re-elected. get a load of this guy.

president plans i will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company. that is an obvious threat to his employees you better vote for romney or i'm going to fire you. it appears do you have another choice. perhaps you could reduce the size of your house. but oh no, no, no, you better not tax me another cent otherwise i'll fire all my workers. which would be a great brilliant business strategy. how would you run a company without workers. then your lazy ass would have to get up off the throne and do some work. in florida in 2000 he did this trick which he admits might have been illegal where he asked all of his workers, 8,000 workers in florida, hey, are you for the republicans or democrats. if they said democrats, then they do anything with them. if they said republicans, they made them register for vote. possibly illegal but who cares. [ laughing ] it's america. the rich get away with everything. now he's not the only one threatening workers.

dorton restaurant, restaurant that i love, i got to be honest with you olive garden, red lobster, the cheese biscuits, but they've got 2,000 restaurant across the country, 180,000 employees, 75% of them work part time. they say if the affordable care act is put in place we might have to put a lot more workers part time instead of full time, knock them down to 30 hours and not cover the insurance. obama made me do it. obama made me do it. i'm not so sure about that. they're not alone. we go to walmart. you want to talk about taking advantage of your employees and shifting costs onto the american tax payers, nobody does that better than walmart. i'm not going to give you benefits. you need benefits either way otherwise you're not going to die in the streets. we'll get them from the government. that's how walmart gives you prices that are so low. they put the costs on the rest of us. what are they doing? some of the employees are literally striking back. for the first time in 50 years

there was a multi-city strike in walmarts across the country. one of the reasons why they were striking initially because they didn't have ceiling fans in the warehouse they were working in. do you know how hot the warehouse was? 120 degrees. put in ceiling fans for the love of christ. now there is a report in arkansas about some of these strikers. >> protesters figured they had seen every top honcho in the company if they showed up, and they did in mass. the protesters are with a group called "making changes in walmart." they came from dallas, miami san francisco, they're complaining about low wages lack of benefits, safety concerns and lack of opportunities for advancement. >> cenk: so now in cities across the country, dallas seattle miami, los angeles

washington, d.c. san francisco sacramento laurel, maryland, theythere are strikers. employee ins across the world has come to join them as well. it's an interesting movement that is taking place one that walmart is not happy about. here is another abc report on this. >> hopefully we can sit down with the person who is in charge and they can negotiate with us, and make everything fair. make everything right, you know? because they're wronging us, and they need to make it right. [ protesting ] >> they're the largest private employer. they could be a better employer. walmart is not the worst place to work but there could be so much more. they have so much more potential. >> cenk: by the way, some of the people that were organizing this, one of them took a lunch break and talked to an organizer, they said you stole time from us and you're fired. gee, i wonder what people are complaining about. now strikers are saying, black

he has organized two groups. this is what he has raised for this election cycle. a gigantic amount of money. when you got that kind of money you've got power. what have they spent already? we've got crossroads at $44 million in total expenditures against democrats $42.7 million. gee, i wonder if they're nonpartisan? because they're spending nearly the democrats. the crossroads gps there is karl rove, he's back, supposed to be a non-profit and not spending it on politics. not really how it's working out. one guy who knows a lot about rove is carl unger. he wrote "boss rove: the secret

kingdom of power" apparently he's back. >> he's back and bigger than ever. a lot of people wrote him off after 2008, and they thought he was merely with george bush. after the citizens united decision he really went to work and he became king of the super pacs. he has hundreds of millions of dollars to spend he's also master of creating a narrative and he's got his people in the romney camp, four or five of his surrogates are really, really prominent figures in the romney camp. >> cenk: so romney will from time to time say i'm not bush. don't put the bush policies on me but is there any real difference here or the same old tax cuts, more wars in the middle east, the same money guys who control bush, who control romney through the conduit of rove? >> well, you know, rove is not a policy guy. he's a politics guy. i think what i'm starting to see

is a replay of the 2004 campaign. back in 2004 he has won his last two presidential elections, his only two. now obama had a very weak performance in the debate, rove could be the guy who makes the difference. you're starting to see that in a strategy that they're calling the jimmy carter strategy, and rove is trying to paint obama as a weak, failed, jimmy carter-like president. you see that narrative going out in ads all over the swing states that are sponsored by crossroads crossroads. >> cenk: and doesn't rove make a tremendous amount of money from all this? >> it's hard to know how much he takes home but as you say there are hundreds of millions of dollars being spent and there are vendors in the media business who take home millions and millions, and it's also a way he has a controlling power.

rove, it seems is intoxicated by power. he sees himself as a great historic figure who is trying to usher in a realignment politically of a new permanent republican majority. his hero is a guy nameed mark hanna,, and rove sees himself the same thing in this election. >> cenk: one of the things about the 50 c 4 they're not supposed to spend their money on political ads. it seems that they're brazenly spending their money on political ads any way. is there anyone minding the house? is there anything that says this is legal or illegal. >> occasionally there are lawsuit, but the problem against crossroads gps but it takes so long to prosecute by then the election is going to be over.

so it's really hard to keep them from getting away from this. one of the things you see the language is butchered, rove refers to these as social welfare organizations, which is kind of silly. he has compared himself to the naacp in the civil rights era in which there were secret donations were allowed. but of course rove is not martin luther king jr. >> cenk: really? yeah to say the least. >> people were fascinated like king was fighting for equal rights and rove and billionaires are fighting for tax breaks. not quite the same. >> cenk: it doesn't matter if you break the laws as the bush administration did because president obama looks forward he doesn't look backwards. he's going let you get away with anything anyway, he's encouraged by that, if you ask me.
